(E) Machinery for carrying out the purposes of the
Universities China Committee in England.
It will be necessary for the Universities China
Committee to create machinery for the proper discharge of its
various functions, both in England and in China. In this sub-
section we WWW propose to deal only with the machinery which in
our opinion should be set up in England.
If effect is given to the various proposals made
in this Report, including the WSSENFWEH foundation of Visiting
Lectureships and Research Fellowships, and the promotion of
Chinese studies in Great Britain, it is obvious that a great
deal of organizing work will have to be carried out in London.
There will also be other duties to be performed to which little
or no reference has been made in the foregoing pages. Some
of them are alluded to in the First Schedule to the China
Indemnity (Application) Act, which enumerates the specific
Purposes for which the sum of £200,000 was granted out of the
Indemnity Fund to the Universities China Committee. These
purposes are described as follows:-
(i) to arrange for such Chinese men and women to
visit and lecture in the United Kingdom and
such British men and women to visit and lecture
in China as may seem to them suitable;
BY
(ii) to assist Chinese students coming to the
United Kingdom to find hospitality and suit-
able living accommodation;
(iii) to advise Chinese students as to their course of studies in the United Kingdom and as to
other matters connected therewith;
(iv) to encourage and facilitate the teaching of
the Chinese language and literature at the universities of the United Kingdom by the
endowment for those purposes of professor- ships and lectureships, or otherwise;
